Draining the Problem: A Guide to Wound Exudate Management
Exudate, a wound fluid containing inflammatory mediators, supports healing but can also activate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), leading to tissue damage and slowed recovery.
Excessive exudate hinders cell proliferation and reduces essential growth factors for regeneration. If mismanaged, it may cause skin damage like periwound maceration and dermatitis, further compromising recovery. Proper assessment and management are key to preventing these complications and promoting effective healing.
