The American College of Podiatric Medicine (ACPM) has a program to encourage students to form ACPM “clubs” on each campus, to emphasize the importance of orthopedics and medicine in the contemporary practice of podiatry. As surgery will account for an average of only 13% of the time spent when in practice, students need to recognize that the biomechanical and medical aspects of podiatric medicine will take up most of their practice time. ACPM is the College that represents the orthopedics and medicine side of practice in the same way that the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) and the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons (ASPS) represent the surgical side of practice. There are sister organizations that certify competence in these two sub-specialty areas: the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) for orthopedics and medicine, and the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS) for surgery.
